This feature is available with all user roles unless specific Backlog restrictions are applied by an admin (e.g., guest with view-only access). Permission from your Google Workspace admin is required to install the apps.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to:
- Connect Google Chat and Backlog
- Use commands
- Manage notifications
Connect Google Chat and Backlog
There are two ways to connect Google Chat and Backlog:
- Enter “@backlog” in Google Chat and select Backlog from the options.
- Search for Backlog using the find apps function.
You’ll see a message once the Backlog app is added.
Use commands
You can perform the following Backlog actions using commands in Google Chat.
/login | Log in to Backlog. |
/logout | Log out of Backlog. |
/settings | Manage notification settings. |
/personalNotifications | Receive personal notifications from Backlog |
/addissue | Add a new issue to your Backlog project. |
/language | Change the language of the chatbot. |
/help | Show list of commands. |
You can log in or out by entering the “/login” or “/logout” command in Google Chat. You need your Space ID to log in and can only log into one Backlog space at a time. If project notifications are on, they won’t be turned off when you log out using the command.
Good to know
Some commands are only visible to you to reduce noise for others in the chat.Enter the “/addissue” command to add an issue. You can enter the issue subject, type, and description via the app. Issues can’t be added to projects with required custom fields.
After an issue is added, select “View in Backlog” to open the issue and add more details.
Enter “/help” in the chat to see a list of available commands.
Enter “/language” in the chat to change the Backlog app command language to English or Japanese in Google Chat.
This doesn’t impact your Google Chat language settings or project notification language settings, which can be changed via Project settings > Integrations > Google Chat > Settings.

Only admins and project admins can manage notification settings for their projects. Enter “/settings” to add notifications about Backlog projects.
To update notification settings:

- Select “Settings” next to Google Chat.
To receive notifications addressed directly to you:

To change the notification chat/channel, you need to delete the current notification settings and re-add them to the new chat/channel.

- In the Backlog project settings, go to Integrations > Google Chat > Settings > Edit > Delete.
