Backlog 101: Gantt charts

Gantt charts, available with Standard plans and above, offer a visual timeline so it’s easy to see when issues are due.

In this overview, we’ll go over:

  • Enabling Gantt charts
  • Displaying issues
  • Editing issues
  • Project Gantt charts
  • Personal Gantt charts
  • Exporting Gantt charts

Enabling Gantt charts

To enable Gantt charts, go to Project settings > General, check the box for “Enable charts,” and select “Submit.” This allows members to add start/due dates and estimated/actual hours for issues.

Displaying issues

Issues are required to have at least one of the following to appear in project or personal Gantt charts:

  • Start/due date
  • Milestone with start/due date

Editing issues

Edit issues directly within the Gantt chart by clicking on the issue name in the side panel or within the chart itself.

  • Select the “Edit” button to edit the assignee and start/due dates (only available for project Gantt charts).
  • Click and drag an issue’s endpoints on the timeline to adjust the start/due dates, or drag and drop the entire block (only available for project Gantt charts).
  • Click on the issue name in the side panel or the chart itself to open the issue details to edit, comment on, or update an issue.

Good to know

Scroll an issue’s timeline by clicking the background and using the hand tool to move right or left.

Project Gantt charts

Filter your project Gantt chart view based on the following:

  • Start date: Set the start date for your Gantt chart timeline or select “Today” to start with the current date.
  • Span: Set the Gantt chart timeline to show 1, 2, 3, or 6 months from the start date.
  • Grouping: Choose to group Gantt chart issues by assignee, category, or parent issue. Child issues are grouped with their parent issues.
  • Status: Choose to view Gantt chart issues based on their status.

 Personal Gantt charts

Each member has their own personal Gantt chart showing their issues across projects. To access your personal Gantt chart, select your profile in the global navigation and then “Gantt chart.” You can view issues by project using the “Grouping” filter.

Exporting Gantt charts

Export your current Gantt chart view by selecting the “Export Excel” button at the top right.
