How to set up two-factor authentication

Add an extra layer of security to your non-Managed Account with two-factor authentication. With two-factor authentication, you must enter your password and a verification code—received via email, text message, or authentication app—every time you log in.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to:

  • Set up two-factor authentication
  • Select your verification method
  • Generate backup codes
  • Disable two-factor authentication

Set up two-factor authentication

To set up two-factor authentication:

  • Select your profile icon in the global navigation.
  • Select “My profile.”
  • Select the “Security” tab at the top.
  • Select “Two-factor authentication” from the menu on the left.
  • Select “Start two-factor authentication.”
  • Select your verification method.

Select your verification method

There are a few ways to verify your login.

To verify via mobile app:

  • Select “Use an app.”
  • Download an authentication app. We recommended Google Authenticator, available on iOS and Android.
  • Scan the QR code on the screen using the app.
  • Enter the verification code from the app.
  • Select “Verify.”

Authentication apps still work when your device doesn’t have service or data.

To verify via security key using a USB:

  • Select “Use security key.”

To verify via text message:

  • Select “Use text message.”
  • Enter your mobile phone number.
  • Select “Send.”
  • Enter the verification code you receive.
  • Select “Submit.”

Standard messaging rates apply.

To verify via email:

  • Select “Use email.”
  • Select “Enable” to send verification codes to that email.

Generate backup codes

Backup codes can help you access your account if you can’t use two-factor authentication. To generate backup codes:

  • Select your profile icon in the global navigation.
  • Select “My profile.”
  • Select the “Security” tab at the top.
  • Select “Two-factor authentication” from the menu on the left.
  • In the “Backup” section, select “Generate backup codes.”
  • A list of 10 backup codes is generated.
  • Download or print the list, and store it in a safe place.
  • Each backup code can only be used once, and generating a new set will cancel the old ones.

Disable two-factor authentication

To disable two-factor authentication:

  • Select your profile icon in the global navigation.
  • Select “My profile.”
  • Select the “Security” tab at the top.
  • Select “Two-factor authentication” from the menu on the left.
  • In the “Status” section, select “Disable two-factor authentication.”
  • Confirm your choice.
